A border crosser between urban and rural areas, for temperatures between fresh to frosty. It is the second part of the “Companyon“ series; the prelude was done some months ago by the “worldʼs lightest sleeping bag”. “For Companyon, we provide covers you can take with you everywhere, since they seem to be almost weightless“, says Kay Steinbach, managing director of Yeti.

Weighing two rye rolls in ones hand, one gets an idea about the jacketʼs approximate weight – between 200 and 250 grams according to size. Packing the rolls in a bag, one achieves the dimensions of the jacket if packed in one of its side pockets. The fi lling consists of 95/5 goose downs with 800 fi llpower, the covering is made of ultra-thin nylon yarn, with just a handful of machines in all over the world capable to interweave it. Its texture is similar to that of paragliders; it is wind- and water-proof and withstands both rock faces as well as long finger nails.

“Nowadays, down jackets alone providing protection against extreme sub-zero temperatures are far from suffi cient“, says Steinbach. The global warming increasingly causes sudden changes in weather. “This jacket is an answer to the climate change.“ It is just the right one during a mild late-summer night ending with gale-force winds, showers of sleet and abrupt drops in temperature.

Who wouldn’t like to travel in a most comfortable way, whether on a trekking tour or a business trip? Bringing along your own sleepingbag taking up “Next to Nothing” space in your back-pack, suitcase or even briefcase?

Yeti has created an ideal “Companyon” for adventures travelling using only the bare essentials and a few lightweight materials:

A sleeping bag which in packed condition is not much larger than a grapefruit. And with just 265 grams can be called the world’s lightest sleeping bag.

For such a lightness to be achieved, the outdoor specialist Yeti processes the lightest and most exclusive materials for its innovation. Yeti’s terminology for the procedure applied is called NTN-Technology (NTN: next to nothing).

The secret of “Next to Nothing” weight is a combination of sophisticated high-tech fabrics, super down and Yeti’s longtime experience in manufacturing state-of-the-art sleepingbags at its own facility in Görlitz, Germany.

The fabric for one sleepingbag is made out of 1000 km of yarn, the distance from Görlitz to London, weighing not more than a mere 140 gram. The fabric has the thickness just 1/20 of a human hair. It is so fine that only 5 weaving machines in the world are able to use it for weaving with all machines placed at a facility in Northern Japan.

Still the airy tissue proves astonishing tear-resistant, and it ensures the hydrophobic, wind-resistant and breathable characteristics of the sleeping bag.

The Passion is filled with 97/3 Chrystaldown, goosedown from the Polish Masurian Lake District, with a rarely achieved loft of 900+ cuin. The specially processed goose down is tested according to European standards and complies to Oeko-Tex Standard 100. Under best conditions, Masurian geese develop an optimal down size within a four-year life-span.

In fact the down is so fine and fluffy that it takes up to 400 pieces to reach the weight of 1 g, and therefore the Prize Winning Passion I has to be filled with approximately 35.000 pieces of down to achieve its total weight of 265 gram.

The lightest sleeping bag of its class comes in the size of a grapefruit. The lightest is "Passion One", starting at 265g, followed by "Passion Three" starting at 465g and completed by "Passion Five" starting at 690g, but still achieving an astonishing comfort temperature of -7°C.

Following the ultra-light line VIB (Very Important Bag), in 2008 voted “Best Sleepingbag in Europe”, Yeti is setting new standards for adventurers travelling using only the bare essentials and a bit more, making the Companyon Line the premium range from the manufacturer of sleeping bags in Görlitz.

Due to the complex production, products with NTN-technology are offered on the market only as limited edition. Consequently just little more than 1,000 Passion sleeping bags will be available in the global market for 2009, in the sizes M, L, XL - and as always: made in Germany.
